OASTS – ROUND AND SQUARE One of the charms of oast houses in Sussex and Kent is that whilst their original function, the drying of hops, is the same, the variety of combinations of kilns and stowage is enormous. Here we have two twin round-kiln oasts and two single square-kiln oasts, all with kilns at one end of the stowage. The cowls also vary with one type common to Kent and one to Sussex, but again this varies along the borderland between the two counties. STEPHEN LANGER ARCHITECTS PORTFOLIO 35
