STEPHEN LANGER ARCHITECTS Combining the art of architecture with the craft of building Established in 1982 by Stephen and Sue Langer and specialising in traditional building design and conservation, we are based in the capital of the Weald of Sussex and Kent, the spa town of Royal Tunbridge Wells. We have extensive experience and expertise in new country houses, conservation/restoration and alteration/extension of listed buildings, conversion of redundant agricultural or industrial structures, flats and housing schemes (new and conversions), and farm diversification/alternative uses for rural buildings…….as well as the odd railway station! The core principle of Stephen Langer Architects is to bring history to life in its buildings, our principal area of interest being the history of the Weald, which has been the hot bed of architectural styles for centuries. The work of the practice is eclectic and not tied to one style. We recognise that the real tradition of house building is derived from a process of continual re-invention and sensitivity to the vernacular. The houses and buildings we create for our clients are expressed in many styles to reflect their lives, characters and circumstances. Whichever stylistic/historic approach is taken, we respect the inherent traditions of building with the use of local materials by skilled craftsmen. The training and development of young architects for the preservation and continuance of traditional architecture goes hand in hand with the apprenticeship of young craftsmen. We provide work experience for students and seminars on listed buildings for various groups. We are a Chartered RIBA Practice and members of the Institute of Historic Building Conservation (IHBC), the Vernacular Architecture Group and the RIBA Traditional Architecture Group (TAG). Other memberships include the Listed Property Owners Club and the Country Landowners Association. Houses are designed and built for people by people. Architects, Robin Robertson RIBA and Stephen Orrin RIBA (retired Dec 2016) have been with Stephen Langer since 1988 and have played signature roles in the evolution of the practice. This continues with Architects Guy de Montfort RIBA, Austin Clegg ARB and Daniel Arpino-Walsh RIBA with technicians Philip Large and Gwyn Bates who make up our current design team. Delivery is as important as design and Andy Peters, our contract administrator, works with our clients, the architects and a group of highly skilled and reputable builders to steer the projects through to fruition. Sally Strang, Kate de Montfort and Sandra Richards provide planning and administrative support. STEPHEN LANGER ARCHITECTS PORTFOLIO 1
